Essential Items For Travelling with Kids!

Most parents will agree, that leaving the house for even the smallest excursion, with little ones on tow is not an easy task.  Changing bags, entertainment, snacks & appropriate outerwear all need preparing in advance of stepping foot out of the door.

Planning for a holiday and what will be needed whilst travelling needs some seriously careful consideration!  Long journeys to the airport, connection times, flights and transfer times mean that getting from A to B, is more like A to Z.

Whenever we travel, there are certain item which I always ensure are to hand for the little ones, to make the whole experience as stress-free as possible.

Snacks & Drinks

Letoya and Ethan both have very healthy appetites and strict eating times.  This is why I always pack a small lunch to bring along, with some healthy snacks.  Before we board the plane I make sure that they have eaten their lunch and had a good drink (I would recommend encouraging them to use the bathroom before boarding the plane if, like me you like to steer clear of the toilets on-board!).  I keep a small pack of raisins or pretzels for the flight.

So, it is quite unrealistic to expect to balance a board game on your lap during the flight.  Thankfully, modern technology has provided us with so many alternatives!  I bring along Letoya’s iPod for her to play on & my iPad for Ethan to watch a few shows he likes.  Of course I wouldn’t let them do this for the full duration, but for moments when you are confined to your seat, this really helps us.  I also bring along a notepad and a couple of pencils for them to draw & a couple of dolls/cars for my little ones to play with.  Throw in a couple of books, and the journey should be a lot easier for the whole family.

Letoya & Ethan both have comforters and cuddly toys that they snuggle into at night.  Depending on the actual length of the journey, it is quite likely that your little ones will have a nap of some kind. Bringing items from home will help make it easier for them to relax and feel safe, secure and comforted.

Changing Bag

As a general rule of thumb, wet wipes are great to have on your person at all times.  They’re great for their intended purpose, but also for cleaning sticky fingers, cleaning up minor spillages and assisting as a stand in where toilet roll has gone amiss! (we’ve all been there at least once).  Nappies and a change of clothing for babies and toddlers is an essential.  You can almost guarantee that when your children are clean, tidy and ready to go, something will be spilled.

Make sure that you have all passports, insurance information & tickets for travel secured safely. Arriving, to then have to turn around is more frustrating than even the most lengthy of flight! Keep these together and safely stored at all times.

Most importantly, have a great time!

Much Love,

Lisa xx

We haven’t been brave enough yet to take our kids on snow airplane, but I would definitely take all of these things with us if we did!

A very practical and handy checklist for all of us who may have to travel with little ones! It can always be a challenge but having a reference point for many of the things you have included here just makes it much easier.

We’ve been traveling with our kids since they were babies and I agree: snacks and entertainment are definitely at the top of the list! Especially for long haul 10+ hour international flights.

Being prepared is the best thing for parents and this really helps get us prepared. I agree with many of these but entertainment during long drives is so important!

We’re getting ready to do our first big trip with both kids, so this couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. I’ve already got the snacks packed, so let’s hope I can keep both of them happy on the 4 flights we have coming up! 🙂

I dread traveling with my daughter. She has so much junk that she insists on bringing along.

That is so true! Snacks always works for me! My kiddies are literally always hungry..

My kids are well traveled and if there is one thing I have learned over the years is that is hungry kids are cranky kids – so we pack LOTS of snacks.
