2017.. New Year New Goals

I have decided to go against tradition and look to set my New Year goals in February.  Why is this you ask?  Well, after reading that most New Year resolutions are made on 1st January, and by the end of January, are dwindling, I decided that I would break with tradition.

After the indulgence of the festive period we all feel the familiar pang of guilt and want to start the New Year with a steely determination to change all that is negative in our lives.  I am by no means rejecting this.  Any improvement is a step in the right direction.  I have merely chosen to look at I really want to achieve this year, when everything has settled back to normal and the New Year ‘hype’ has passed, so as to see things with a clear and objective mind.

So, what am I looking to achieve this year?  I’ll give you a run-down:

  1. Having had two beautiful children, that I absolutely cherish, my physique and fitness level are not where they need to be.  Prior to having them, I was slim and relatively healthy.  I’ve never been on par with the folks on Instagram doing yoga poses on top of lofty rooftops, but I have been fitter in mind and body.  Yes, running around after two energetic children has kept some of the pounds off, but I am really focusing on how I can become more toned and strong, with a real focus on core strength.  We have a healthy, balanced diet (on the whole), but working at a desk from 9-5 does me no favours.  When looking at how I will achieve this, I have decided that I will choose a routine that fits into my lifestyle.  I have learned that googling ‘fitness workouts’ is a MISTAKE!  For the layman looking from the outside, the level of choice is stifling.  Adapting some moderate exercise and improvement in diet is where I am focusing my efforts.  After all, it is all input/output.  And any increase in exercise will only move me closer to my goal.  I look forward to tracking my progress with you.
  2. Spending more time with my family, doing things that will add value to our lives is an area I think that every person can identify with.  Work and life in general often gets in the way of what we really want to do and see as important.  Yes, work is a reality of all of our lives, but I am looking at how I can better manage my time, to maximize the time I spend with my family.  Be it, being more organized and booking trips early, or making sure that my daughter and I get one morning a month together to go shopping together and for some cake and hot chocolate.
  3. For years I have spoken at length to those close to me about my intention to learn a new language.  I have such admiration for the bi-lingual.  Communication is the single most important tool we can use in society.  Being able to understand languge better and reach out to more people would be a great achievement.  I am going to start with Spanish.  My daughter (Letoya), currently speaks it to a much higher standard than myself, so I have a mentor on tap!  There are so many great language learning apps available for free.  I’ve downloaded Duo-Lingo, so aqui vamos! Wish me luck!
  4. I mentioned in my first blog post that my blog has been a long time coming.  After registering a domain nearly 2 years ago now, I have been hesitant to start.  This year is the year that I am diving into blogging, head first.  After questioning myself for such a long time, I’ve decided I need to let go of any insecurities and worries and just do it!  I hope you will join me along the way.
